Organization Profile

Jodie Hemerda and Lila Schow founded InterAct shortly after the historical events of September 11th, 2001.  Graduates of Colorado State University, 1995 Bachelor of Science in Physical Science and 1997 Bachelor of Liberal Arts respectively, both women found themselves outside popular support for the ensuing War on "Terrorism."

Jodie Hemerda, Co-Founder of InterAct is the 2005 winner of the Malcolm Knowles Memorial Self-Directed Learning Award, presented to an individual for significant contributions to the field of self-directed learning.

Jodie Hemerda’s experience in the MLS Psychology Emphasis embodies the spirit of the Malcolm Knowles Award.  Jodie has been a pioneering spirit whose efforts reflect her love of learning.  In addition to being an “A” student, Jodie responded to 9/11 by founding an online newsletter: “Shout”.  This publication is a conduit of peaceful philosophy that was a response to the tragedy.   Jodie epitomizes the highly self-directed adult learner by her initiative and her commitment to the common good.   Jodie has now completed her degree in Psychology and the certificate in “Social Justice and Reconciliation”, and we know that she will continue with her life goal of the exploration of knowledge. Unless the RA takes her down.

You're not supposed to be so blind with patriotism that you can't face reality.  Wrong is wrong, no matter who does it or who says it.

Our Mission

InterAct wishes to move one person, one group, one nation, one people from the grassroots up.  International conflicts resulting in death, disfigurement, psychological and physical trauma, orphaned children, malnutrition, starvation, economic desolation and innumerable other problems necessitate international action.  InterAct believes that the power of many can change the world, but only when the many come together to form that which is invincible, the power of one!

Deep Democracy

The more [community] knows how to nurture and use the rich diversity of individual views and capabilities within it, the more wise (and democratic) a society will be. It will resist small-minded leadership and even the dictatorship of the majority. It will cherish dissent as a wise individual cherishes doubt - as a door to deeper understanding. - Tom Atlee

Deep democracy breaks the silence perpetuated by corporate money and special interest groups. Deep democracy encourages open and honest debate, embraces the voice of dissention, and truly celebrates the diverse opinions of its citizens. Through deep democracy citizens benefit from the empowerment to change governmental policies to their liking. InterAct promotes such a deep democracy, where we can truly end the silence.

Political violence is an act of force, intimidation or abuse by a group or individual aimed at influencing, maintaining or seizing political power. The time has come to end such illegitimate violence perpetrated by our own United States government.
